Originally developed in 1925 by a group of Brazilian brothers (Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastao Jr, George, and Helio Gracie), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stems from a traveling Japanese martial artist, Mitsuyo Maeda, who mastered ground fighting. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a derivative of Maeda’s work, even adapting some Judo into the art form.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated as a self-defense martial art, but has since become one of the most popular combat sports. The art highlights grappling, ground fighting, and submission maneuvers. Common emphasis is placed on taking opponents to the ground, where a dominant position can be gained. From here, the art utilizes many techniques, such as joint locks or chokeholds, to submit their opponent.

The most basic concept of BJJ revolves around the idea that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against larger, stronger opponents (this concept was called jujutsu in Japanese). The BJJ martial artist achieves this feat by utilizing leverage and weight distribution to their advantage. Sparring, live drilling, and “rolling” all play a part in the development of a good BJJ martial artist.
